Seventeen-year-old Tate is about to make her parents’ dreams come true. Unfortunately for her, their dreams foretell her death.

Eager to explore more of the Estilorian plane and prove her abilities, Tate goes against her parents’ wishes and leaves the area of protection surrounding her home. Her choice puts her on a deadly path…one that leaves her alone, severely injured and battling for her life.

Her possible savior arrives in the form of Zachariah, a male who has removed himself from Estilorian society for more than fifty years. Fighting an unexpected connection to Tate, he must decide whether saving her life is worth destroying his.

As Tate struggles to find a way home, she ends up drawn into a dark Mercesti plot involving multiple murders and a powerful ancient artifact. With the unpredictable Zachariah as her only source for aid, she’ll soon find out if her abilities are strong enough to help her defy her Fate.

(MY THOUGHTS)
I would first like to say I haven't read Raine Thomas's Daughters of Saraqael trilogy, and this first novel Defy, which is the Firstborn trilogy, is about the children of these daughters of Saraqael. Raine Thomas has added a glossary at the beginning of Defy for readers like me who haven’t read her novels. I found this very helpful to know who the daughters of Sarqael are, and to know that Defy is about the children of these daughters. Thomas has built an incredible world, which is called the Estilorian plane, and has a huge list of characters and is told from nine points of view. The main character is Tate, since this is Tate's story. I also would like to say Thomas gives readers excellent, in depth descriptions of this world and who the characters are. The first half of Defy is a process of getting to know this world and the characters in order to get to good stuff. But once I did, I fell in love with this fantastic world, wonderful characters, and the amazing storyline.

Tate is the firstborn daughter of Skye and Caleb, Tate will be turning eighteen in two weeks. Eighteen is the age where these children of the daughters of Saraqael will get their wings and be paired with their mates. Tate is also a twin, and her and her twin brother Tiege are total opposites. Tate is a strong-willed, stubborn girl who pretty much does what she wants. And this is how she gets herself into big trouble. She’s not supposed to go outside the protected area until she turns eighteen and gets her wings, but Tate can't wait to see the outside world. But listening to her parents has never been a strong point in Tate's life when she wants to do her own thing.

Tate soon discovers she’s in a lot of trouble outside the protection area. When a stranger named Zachariah saves her life twice, she learns she’s not as tough or as smart as she thought, and wishes she had listened to her father. Tate appoints Zachariah to be her protector and to help her get back home, but this is not what Zachariah had in mind when he saved Tate’s life. Zachariah is a loner, and he left Tate's people—the Gloresti—fifty years ago and he has no desire to return to Estilorian with her.

Tate and Zachariah’s romance is hilarious. Tate being the head-strong girl that she is, and Zachariah being the loner, and also one heck of a head-strong guy himself. Their love becomes a romance of fighting fire with fire, and it’s just as hot. Poor Zachariah doesn’t have a chance against not falling for Tate. She’s the only girl strong enough to take on Zachariah, the bad boy with all his secrets. The same is true when it comes to Tate, Zachariah is the only guy that can handle Tate.

Defy is a beautiful novel about Tate, a girl growing up and falling in love who becomes a strong and independent women. Raine Thomas is amazing at world building, while bringing us to the next generation the children of these daughters of Saraqael, the Firstborn trilogy. I can't wait to read the next editions in the Firstborn trilogy by Raine Thomas.

  4. WOW another awesomeness review :) It seems like you find the best romances :D I really like what you said about the Glossary in the front that helped out, I really like it when stories that have a lot of terms and places put a Glossary in the front so I know what is going on LOL. I also like the fact that the two are so stubborn yet fall for each other! This looks like a great book Debbie, thank you so much for sharing...
