                    Defy the Stars

                                                by

Julia Cape: A dedicated classical piano student just trying to get through her last semester of high school while waiting to hear from music conservatories.

Reed MacAllister: A slacker more likely to be found by the stoners’ tree than in class.

Julia and Reed might have graduated high school without ever speaking to each other…until, during a class discussion of Romeo and Juliet, Julia scoffs at the play’s theme of love at first sight, and Reed responds by arguing that feelings don’t always have to make sense. Julia tries to shake off Reed’s comment and forget about this boy who hangs with the stoner crowd—and who happens to have breathtaking blue eyes—but fate seems to bring the two together again and again. After they share an impulsive, passionate kiss, neither one can deny the chemistry between them. Yet as Julia gets closer to Reed, she also finds herself drawn into his dark world of drugs and violence. Then a horrific tragedy forces Julia’s and Reed’s families even farther apart…and Julia must decide whether she’s willing to give up everything for love.

Defy the Stars is written in an edgy free-verse style that will appeal to fans of Ellen Hopkins and Lisa Schroeder; however, the writing is accessible enough to speak to non-verse fans as well. The novel’s combination of steamy romance and raw emotion will appeal to fans of Gayle Forman, Simone Elkeles, Jennifer Echols, and Tammara Webber. With a story, language and form that both pay homage to and subvert Shakespeare’s play, Defy the Stars is much more than just another Romeo and Juliet story.

MY THOUGHTS

Defy the Stars ripped my heart out. I thought waiting a week after reading this heart-breaking love story would let my emotions calm down enough to write a review, but I’m still crying. Stephanie Parent’s awesomeness as a talented writer can clearly be seen in this beautiful novel. Parent has just become one my favorite authors. I love Parent's verse writing. The verse definitely made Julia and Reed's love for each other a deeper, heart-felt read for me. I also loved that Parent showed the real lifestyle of today’s teens. Julia’s a heroine that I absolutely loved because she wasn't "little miss perfect". Reed’s a loser bad boy that totally stole my heart, and Perry, who this world would see as the nice, respectable teenager, is nothing but a slithery, evil snake. Perry goes on my all-time Scum Bag Jerk List. I really disliked this guy.

Julia is waiting for this last semester of her senior year to be over. She’s ready to start her new life as a pianist at Peabody College. She can’t get away from her life in the town of Fairvern, her parents, and Perry the pervert fast enough. But in Julia’s English class, the Romeo and Juliet play, and stoner bad boy name Reed changed Julia's life and heart forever.

Reed's life was already defined by the stars to be a loser. He drew the short stick in life. But when he and Julia fall in love, her love is everything to him, but it's still hard for him to believe that the stars could give him a chance at a better life. I fell in love with Reed. He’s one of those loser bad boys that really is a good person and has a good heart, he just needs that one person to love him and show him the way to believe in himself.

Perry—there are no words for him, other than to call him king of the pricks. I definitely hate this guy. He's the kind of guy that wants something just because he can't have it, and if he can't have it, he makes damn sure no one else will either. His character is one I love to hate!

Defy the Stars is a beautiful, Romeo and Juliet love story set in today time. Stephine Parent has done an amazing job of putting her own heart-felt twist of woe with Julia and Reed's love story. Defy the Stars is definitely going on my most favorite books list.  I recommend Defy the Stars as a break-your-heart, must read.
