But when Melanie tragically dies after a night of wild partying, Sydney and Evan turn to each other in a time of intense grief. And it doesn't take long for their close friendship to blossom into something more.

They say that on film, chemistry is always by chance. Any Hollywood producer can put two A-list movie stars in a romantic comedy, but only rarely will those two actors actually have chemistry. It’s not just about how beautiful two people are on the outside, or even how they look together. It’s about how they feel together. It’s not something that can be controlled, and it can never be forced. It’s the same way with writing. You can have two characters pine after each other on the page, but ultimately chemistry goes deeper than that, and any writer who tries to force that chemistry will struggle keeping his reader engaged.
With Crashing Into You, I didn’t try to take any one scene and write sentences to bring out some kind of forced chemistry between Sydney and Evan. This is not a conventional love story of boy-meets-girl. In many ways Crashing Into You is about non-chemistry, about people and couples who may not deserve to be together, or who may be all wrong for each other. Sydney and Evan don’t have a Meet Cute, and they certainly don’t have a conventional love story. When they’re finally spending more time together, Sydney is still trying to come to terms with the death of her ex-boyfriend James, and Evan has barely come to terms with the death of his girlfriend Melanie, who died of alcohol poisoning. These are wounded, flawed characters who turn to each other in a time of need, and while they care about each other, they have a lot of demons to sort through.
At the end of the book, readers are left wondering if Sydney and Evan are going to stay together. They’re also left wondering the more important question: should they stay together? It all boils down to chemistry. I tried to give Sydney and Evan quiet moments throughout the book, like when they’re in class, eating lunch together, walking up and down the beach, and laying in bed after sex. Despite the travesties the characters may have committed in the past, they have a need, a hunger, for each other, and want their relationship to have a happy ending. Whether the chemistry they have together is enough for their romance to last, only time will tell.
